Abalone shell is often used to hold sacred herbs for burning. A few spoonfuls of herbs are placed into the shell and lit. The shell can be carried around a space to bring the smoke through different rooms or areas, or you can pass objects through the smoke that arises. The burning of the herbs will leave dark ash burn marks in the shell and obscure the colorful iridescent mother of pearl. If you plan to burn for more than a few minutes the shell will heat up and should be placed in a stand to keep your hands safe.
